Objectives

As a result of participating in this course, learners will be better able to:

  1. understand that a proper history is essential to evaluate the traumatized patient;
  2. utilize the pattern approach, which can identify where one needs to look for fracture in the traumatized patient;
  3. recognize radiographic signs of soft tissue injury during whiplash; and
  4. identify and apply specific evaluation techniques to improve outcomes with traumatic injury patients.

1 Introduction:  Definitions of trauma.  Guidelines for evaluation of trauma.  Imaging modalities used in the evaluation of the traumatized patient.
2 Cervical spine: Classification fractures by pattern with examples.
3 Whiplash: Definitions, Imaging evaluation for whiplash with examples.
4 Thoracolumbar spine: Classification of fractures with examples.
5 Upper extremity: Review of shoulder girdle, elbow and wrist injuries.
6 Lower extremity: Review of pelvis/hip, femur and lower leg/foot injuries.
